My teachers told me I was born.
How does an old school director adapt to the new world?
I have adapted a lot because I discovered that there is the “Google mind”: information is acquired and deleted immediately when the phone is turned off. The page was closed, and the information was forgotten. People only have information, they do not withhold it.
What do you think of the viral phenomena that make a stranger, with more or less talent, a musical idol worldwide?
That boy or girl will enter a commercial and ephemeral world and will last as long as it is fashionable. Then who does not remember his name. In classical music it is not so. It may be someone completely unknown, but when the strainer has passed, it stays in perpetuity.

Mozart would have been a genius of social networks. But all of them would have been able to take advantage of it, not to become famous for money, but for music. The directors did not do it for the money, we did it for the music. Some still do. But now many believe that if you’re not famous you’ll never be able to do it. They care more about fame.
Like the Venezuelan Gustavo Dudamel?
It is a whole system, of which he is spearhead. It was designed in Venezuela to train musicians in the same way that women are trained for Miss Universe.
Is the conductor a leader or an artist?
What does the baton have as a magic wand?
Magic wand has nothing. The power of the director is to communicate to the musicians the wishes of the music. That they get infected with that knowledge and that passion and can transmit it to an audience.
What similarity is there between the conductor of an orchestra and the director of a company or a social leader?
They look alike in leadership, in finding ways to motivate the worker. One has to motivate the musician, as a leader of any company, of any state, city and country, motivates his people, the people. Then that similarity exists.
And what difference does it make?
The difference is that in the orchestra there is a law that will continue to be respected until the end of time that is called music. No one can betray the music.
Is Mexico well run?
What happened to Mexico was that for years they brought it from one side to the other. Every six years it changed because everyone who entered wanted to be noticed, there was no continuity in all aspects that was needed, especially the culture was the one that suffered the most.
What do you think of the wall?
I am not a politician, but if in a deprived orchestra a section of contact with the rest of the orchestra, it ceases to be an orchestra. I am in favor of everything that unifies the world, like the European Union, as Latin America could be, anything that unifies is going to be better because we understand each other. The world is an orchestra.
Which classic best describes the moment we currently live?
Many works that were composed in the 60’s and 70’s, in something that was called random music.
What is that kind of music?
Let everyone do what he wants. The conductor only gives some indication, but musicians can decide whether to follow it or not. Then the melody is removed, the harmony is removed and the rhythm is removed. It was to interpret in a new way, without rules. But to break the rules you have to know them. And today what we see in life is that democracy, freedom, some have wanted to interpret it at random, without respecting the limits. That leads to chaos.
When you drive, what do you think?
When I lead I enter into a trance, in which music invites either to meditate, to passion, to be happy.
Some recognize him and others criticize him that he likes to break the fourth wall of the stage, talk to the public and involve him, why does he?

Neither this nor any other popular or commercial work can be directed as it is. It can not be crossed. For example, when it comes to playing The Beatles music, it’s impossible! His music is unrepeatable because we no longer have those guitars, that battery. What we can do is adapt their melodies, make some orchestration that represents in a symphonic work the music of these authors.
Is there music that stinks in the ear?

No, for me they are my heroes, composers are my heroes.
What piece do you want to play at your funeral?
Since I will not be, why do I want them to play? I will not listen to it, so I do not know.
So what work would you like it to be used for the soundtrack of your life?
I am an interpreter, I am a musician; When I am performing a work, for me that work is the most important, that of that moment. No matter what, if I decided to do that work, that work is the most important.
If I could hear a single sound before I died, what would it be?
It would have to be that of the horn because it represents the voice of God.
